Jassi’s fans are angry

Jassi, the Mona Singh of Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin, seems to have fallen out of favour with her fans. All those who were delighted with the fact that a postage stamp was dedicated to Jassi are now so disgusted that she has fallen in the way and has become no better than any of the myriad heroines of the other serials.

The reason for this disappointment — pre-marital sex. “By having pre-marital sex track, how is she any different from the Kkusums, Kripas and other K-serial heroines? Now who will dare to say they want their daughter to be like Jassi — a pre-wed mother?”So asked an irate viewer.

Obviously, these fans haven’t heard of contraception and family planning or women’s liberation.

Why CJ is Jassi's best friend

Vikas Bhalla seems a multi-talented star. He has dabbled in films, television and a singing career.

After featuring in serials like Tum Bin Jaoon Kahan and Karishma: The Miracles Of Destiny, he is now appearing in Sony's popular show, Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin.

Bhalla talks to Vidya Prabhu about his serial and more.

Tell us about your role in Jassi.

I play C J Oberoi, a multi-faceted personality. He is arrogant and kind at the same time. It's more along the lines of Jekyll and Hyde.

A negative role?

I don't think so. CJ believes what he is doing is right. He might come across as negative to some, but eventually he ends up being an ardent supporter and friend of Jassi.

What made you take up Jassi?

Everything about the show appealed to me. It's a hugely popular show with a brilliant cast and crew, not to mention my very well carved out role.

What's common to both Vikas and CJ?

We are go-getters. The similarities end at that.

Why did you switch from singing to acting?

In my struggling days, in the early 1990s, I was primarily looking at singing offers. Then I met director Sudhakar Bokade, who auditioned me. Before I knew it, I was working on my first film Sauda, followed by films with stars such as Kajol, Manisha Koirala, Ayesha Jhulka and Neelam.

But your films did not click.

I gave films my best shot but there is such a thing called destiny and I believe in it. Often, good movies don't click while mediocre ones make waves at the box office.

Any regrets?

None at all.

What are your upcoming projects?

As far as television is concerned, I'm working on Shanno ki Shaadi with Divya Dutta. It will go on air in August.

I have got three films lined up -- Marigold with Salman Khan, Pyar Mein Twist with Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia, and a Hindi-Punjabi bilingual called Chudiyan with Gracy Singh.

My next album, Sajna, will release in two months.

What is your ideal role?

The role potrayed by K K Menon in Sarkar.

Who are your favourite actors?

Tom Hanks, Aamir Khan and Kamal Haasan for their acting prowess. Undoubtedly, Kishore Kumar for his singing.

Matches are supposedly made in heaven!

Some like it cold

Matches are supposedly made in heaven, mismatches are definitely created on television.

By: Shailaja Bajpai and Sonia Wahengbam

WE strongly recommend the services of Alicia Silverstone (Miss Match, Star World) to Indian TV serial producers. Because, God do they need help!

None more so than the producers of Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin (Sony). Before Jassi morphed into Jessica, her unrequited love for Armaan throbbed with her every heartbeat. Now that Armaan returns her affections, they have about as much chemistry as dead wood. No matter how long they gaze at each other there are no stars in those eyes, no matter how tightly they embrace, there is no heat generated and no matter how sweetly they serenade each other, theirs is no love song. Ergo, as a couple they have nothing going for them. Jassi and Purab at least wore spectacles and looked glassy-eyed while Mallika and Armaan had (bad) vibes.

The mismatch of Jessica and Armaan, is matched by numerous other on-screen romantic failures. Take Gautam and Damini of Kyunki.... They generate about as much heat as a power failure. He’s the original cold fish and she the drip. Together they resemble a tap.

Another flame that refuses to ignite is Abhay and the new Kkusum played by Shilpa Saklani (Kkusum, Sony). She looks young enough to be his daughter and her perpetual stony expression doesn’t exude much passion.

Similarly, Smriti and Raunak of K Street Pali Hill (Star Plus) look inappropriate. He looks too young and immature for her and she, too old. As for their relationship, it’s more like sister and brother.

Then, there are a number of new young ’uns but there is no puppy love yapping between them. Consider couples like Shravan and Kasak of Kasauti Zindagi Kay and Angad and Kripa of Kaisa Yeh Pyar Hain. The guys don’t have the looks to awaken any passion and the girls look just too sweet. Together, they are flops. It’s not just that it is not happening, it’s also not there.

We also have couples who were never made for each other but are making do with each other. Leading the list is Samir and Gayatri (Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki, Star Plus), Ronit and Poornima (Yeh Meri Life Hai, Sony) and Garv and Kali (Kkusum, Sony). Here, the men love other women—Shruti, Pooja, Kumud—and don’t mind showing it. There is an art of playing the long suffering, jealous wife but Gayatri, Poornima and Kali never learnt it. Consequently, the scenes between husband and wife are as hysterical as in

Ha, Ha, Ha!

Lastly, is the “everlasting” love story of Kkavya and Anjali. They are meant to be so close even their names are joined in holy matrimony—Kkavyanjali (Star Plus). In this case, they look good—apart. Once they are together, she looks too good for him and he looks the other way.

All of which makes you pine for Prerna and Anurag (Kasauti), or Sujal and Kashish (Kahiin To Hoga, Star Plus). To say nothing of Hiten Tejwani and Gauri Pradhan on Kutumb could have set off a nuclear bomb and led to marriage in real life.

Talk about on and off screen chemistry.
